Checksum a download, compare two files, or hash a string for a non-security fingerprint. SHA-256 and SHA-512 use Web Crypto; MD5 is computed locally for legacy checksums.
MD5 is not suitable for passwords. Use it only when a host still publishes MD5 sums. File hashing reads the bytes in this tab.

Do you upload the file I hash?
No. The digest is computed in the browser from the file bytes.
Should I use MD5 for passwords?
No. MD5 is here for legacy checksums. Store passwords with a slow hash such as bcrypt — GraphicByte accounts already do.
What encoding is used for text?
UTF-8. The same string hashed on another UTF-8 tool should match.
